In its efforts towards supporting the vulnerable communities, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, IITA, through the Feed the Future, Nigeria Integrated Agriculture Activity funded by USAID has conducted a Brown Field Day for no fewer than 350 smallholder farmers and beneficiaries in Yobe State. Mr. Abikoye Joseph the Senior Technical Officer and Team Lead in Yobe State made this known to Radio Nigeria Correspondent in Potiskum Yobe. According to Mr. Joseph, Some Farmers were selected from Potiskum, Fika, and Nangere Local Governments, to benefit from the Dry season farming to Cushion the effects of crop failure they experienced during the rainy season as a result of early stoppage of rainfall. Mr Joseph Said as part of Nigeria Integrated Agriculture Activity's intervention in the Northeast, they have Provided Farmers with Climate-smart improved Seeds of Rice, Millet, Sorghum, and Cowpeas for them to cultivate and also become Seed Producers. One of the beneficiaries of the intervention, Naomi Adamu thanked Feed-the-Future Nigeria Integrated Agriculture Activity for the support, stressing that the support will go a long way in motivating them to improve production. Another Farmer who had benefited from the intervention, Mohammed Usman Dan Fulani, cultivated Sorghum and said it yielded a higher harvest within the shortest period. Also, a beneficiary Mallam Yelwa Yau Mamudo talks on the importance of pest control and advises that integrated pest management should be adopted. The beneficiaries further expressed satisfaction with USAID and IITA/ ICRISAT’s intervention, adding that the support through improved seeds, technologies, innovations, and the Good Agricultural Practices had helped boost their productivity.
