Government at all levels have been urged to provide incentives to health workers to make them work in rural areas to improve access to primary health care services at the grassroots .
Speaking at a town Hall meeting on primary health care delivery in the North West/North Central zones in Ilorin, themed: rethinking rural healthcare, building a safer community; the Executive Director of a Non- governmental organization,Mallam Abdulateef Abubakar Jos, lamented deplorable conditions of infrastructure in primary health care centres, among other factors in many states.
According to him inadequate skilled staffing and lack of essential drugs are some of the other factors discouraging access to primary health care centres in the country.
He explained that there are some areas that health officers do not want to work.
Mallam Abubakar -Jos ,said the programme is looking at how it can make primary healthcare work and make primary health care accessible at the grassroots .
Earlier in her address , the Executive Director of the Kwara state Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Nusirat Elelu, said that primary health care is the first tier of health care for majority of people, especially at the grassroots, adding that there is huge decay in the PHC sector in the country.
